2009-10 SNHU Athletics Year in Review: February

February

3 – Women’s basketball completes a season sweep of Saint Anselm with a 58-54 win, its ninth win over the Hawks in the previous 10 meetings.  Ashara Carrington totaled 15 points while Christine Duffy added 10.

9Ashara Carrington totaled 25 points and nine rebounds as women’s basketball topped UMass Lowell 70-61.  Christine Duffy drained three three-pointers and scored 13, while Jenny McDade had 12 points and 10 boards.

13 – Men’s basketball nearly pulls off another upset of a nationally-ranked Bentley squad, falling to the No. 13 Falcons 72-66 in overtime.  The Falcons scored the final nine points of regulation.  Tory Stapleton led the Penmen with 15 points, while Stephen Wood added 12 points and eight rebounds.

13 – The hockey team erupts for a season-high eight goals in an 8-3 win over Stonehill.  The Penmen scored six times in the second period.  Brandon Bradley had three goals for SNHU, while Andrew Hildreth handed out four assists.

17Tory Stapleton finished with 19 points as men’s basketball escaped Saint Michael’s with a 83-80 overtime win.  Stephen Wood recorded 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

17 – In a one-point defeat at Saint Michael’s, Ashara Carrington became the 13th SNHU women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000 point mark with 20 points.  Jenny McDade and Sloane Sorrell added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

20 – Using a pair of third period power play goals, the hockey team rallied past Assumption for a 2-1 win.  Doug Boulanger potted the game-winner with 3:55 remaining, while Kent Honeyman had the other goal on a 5-on-3.  Shane Brooks stopped 28 shots in goal.

22Sloane Sorrell garnered NE-10 women’s basketball Freshman of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after averaging 9.0 ppg and 4.5 ppg in two games.

26 – Three players from the women’s basketball team are honored by the Northeast-10.  Ashara Carrington was a Second Team All-Conference selection, while Jenny McDade was named to the Third Team.  Sloane Sorrell was named to the All-Rookie Team.

27 – Men’s basketball enters the Northeast-10 Tournament as the No. 11 seed and upends No. 6 seed Saint Rose on the road 84-77.  Tory Stapleton had a career-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  The win gave Stan Spirou his 499th career victory.

27 – The hockey team was eliminated from the Northeast-10 Tournament as it fell 7-5 at Saint Michael’s.  Andrew Hildreth, Matt Farley and John Frey each totaled a goal and an assist.

28 - Women's basketball falls to Assumption 77-70 in the first round of the Northeast-10 Tournament.  Sloane Sorrell totaled 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Penmen.
