SNHU Chosen as NCAA DII Award of Excellence Finalist for JoyJar Initiative

INDIANAPOLIS – Southern New Hampshire University was named one of 21 finalists for the 2018 Division II Award of Excellence on Tuesday, for the involvement of its men's and women's soccer teams in a JoyJar initiative to benefit children and families battling cancer back in October.

SNHU was one of 19 schools, nationwide, that were joined by two conferences in being selected as finalists for the honor, which recognizes campus and community engagement efforts over the past year. Division II annually honors its members for leading events that exemplify any of the six Division II attributes: learning, balance, resourcefulness, sportsmanship, passion and service. A committee of athletics administrators determined this year's finalists, and the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will select the winner, which will be announced during the Division II business session at the 2018 NCAA Convention on Jan. 20 in Indianapolis.

The Penmen men's and women's soccer teams joined the New England Revolution's Kelyn Rowe, to stuff 250 JoyJars that were delivered to children and families fighting cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital in early October. JoyJars are plastic jars filled with toys and activities, inspired by Jessie Rees, a 12-year old cancer patient, who wanted to send hope, joy and love to her peers battling cancer. Rees filled more than 3,000 JoyJars during her fight in 2011, with her memory and cause being carried on today by the Jessie Rees Foundation. Click HERE for more information.

Each finalist will receive $500. The winner will receive $1,500 and a nationally-televised football or basketball game during the 2018-19 season. The first runner-up will receive $1,250, and the second runner-up will receive $1,000. All prize money is intended to be used for future community engagement activities.
