Junior Mendez Selected as NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week
DALLAS – Junior righthander Junior Mendez (Patchogue, N.Y.) of the Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was honored Wednesday as the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) Division II National Pitcher of the Week.
Mendez recorded a no-hitter in a 2-0 victory over the University of the Sciences on Sunday afternoon, SNHU's lone game of the week. He struck out 15 batters without issuing a walk, and faced the minimum 27 batters for the game as SNHU recorded a double play in the seventh after the leadoff batter reached on an error. Mendez retired the first 18 batters of the ballgame.
On the season, Mendez, a Northeast-10 Third Team selection a year ago, is 2-0 and has struck out 26 batters without a walk in 16 innings of work. He has allowed one unearned run and surrendered just three hits on the season. Mendez has moved into seventh place on Southern New Hampshire's career strikeout list with 139 for his career.
