A three-run home run by Rob Andreoli and a complete game from Jake DeCarli led fourth-seeded Long Island University-LIU Post to a 4-2 victory over fifth-seeded Felician University in the third game of the NCAA East Regional Championship on Thursday at Southern New Hampshire University's Penmen Field.
DeCarli held Felician to two runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts to move to 9-1 on the season for LIU Post.
Felician took a very-early 1-0 lead when leadoff man Matt Diesel lined the second pitch of the game for an opposite-field home run that cleared the fence near the left-field corner. LIU Post responded in the bottom of the first on a towering solo shot to left by Kenny Daley to quickly tie it back up.
The Pioneers went on top 4-1 in the home half of the third on a three-run blast to right off the bat of Andreoli. Andreoli's long-ball came after Joe Spitaleri singled to start the frame and stole second prior to a walk to Daley.
In the top of the sixth, the Golden Falcons threatened to cut into the Pioneers' three-run lead as Brennan Price laced a one-out double to the gap in left center. Matt Kleinstein followed with a fly ball headed towards the right-center gap, but Dave Brehm made a sliding catch to help LIU Post get out of the inning.
The score remained 4-1 until Felician got one back off DeCarli in the ninth by taking advantage of Kleinstein's leadoff double, as he advanced to third on a ground out by Jason Polgano and scored on a grounder to second by J.R. Meneses.
