Dominican (N.Y.) Capitalizes on So. Connecticut Miscues, Adds on Late in 5-3 Win

When and Where: May 19, 2017 – Manchester, N.H. (Penmen Field)
#7 Dominican (N.Y.) College 5, #6 Southern Connecticut State University 3
Records: Dominican (N.Y.) 22-28, SCSU 27-16-1

A costly seventh-inning error allowed seventh-seeded Dominican (N.Y.) College to push across the go ahead run and the Chargers would add three important insurance runs over the final two innings to post a 5-3 victory over sixth-seeded Southern Connecticut State University in an NCAA East Regional Championship elimination game Friday at Southern New Hampshire University's Penmen Field.

Dominican drew first blood in the top of the first when, after back-to-back base knocks and a sacrifice bunt, Joshua Colon lifted a sac fly to foul territory in right field to bring in the game's first run.

Fun with two tied the game for Southern Connecticut as Griffin Garabedian's two-out double to right-center set up an RBI single up the middle for Jim Palmer that knotted the game, 1-all.

A costly Southern Connecticut error allowed Dominican to grab the 2-1 lead in the seventh as Joseph Libio's two-out infield single to short plated an unearned run.

Dominican added to its lead in the eighth with three straight two-out singles, including Jordan Bernacet's sharp grounder to first that took a vicious hop off the first baseman to bring home Anthony Bartolomei, who began the rally with a single down the left field line.

Another two-out hit in the ninth – this one an RBI double to the gap in right-center off the bat of Jayson Gray – widened the gap before a costly dropped fly ball brought in another run that made it 5-1.

The Owls made it interesting in the ninth after Garabedian swatted a two-run homer to right, but that was as close as Southern Connecticut would make it.

Brett Schneider (4-3) earned the win for Dominican as he allowed three runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out nine over nine innings.

Nate Carney (4-4) suffered the loss for Southern Connecticut, but only allowed two runs – one earned – on six hits, striking out a pair and walking one, in seven innings.

Bartolomei (walk, two runs), Libio (RBI, run) and Justin Decker were each 2-for-4 for Dominican. Bernacet finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, with Gray going 1-for-4 with an RBI and run.

Garabedian led the Southern Connecticut offense by going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Greg Zullo was 1-for-3 with a walk.
