Seniors Dimitri Floras (Merrimack, N.H.) and Chris Walters (Stamford, Conn.) combined for 40 points, while junior Daquaise Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) notched a double-double, to lead the 17th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team to a 76-65 victory against Assumption College on Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Floras netted 21 points (7-13 FG, 3-5 3-FG, 4-4 FT), while filling out the box score with two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Walters posted 19 points (5-12 FG, 9-12 FT), including 12 after halftime, and four rebounds, with Andrews recording 15 points (6-9 FG, 3-5 FT), 10 rebounds and two steals. Junior Charlie Russo (Syracuse, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-5 3-FG), to go along with four rebounds, three steals and a pair of helpers.
Ben Vujadinovic led the Greyhounds with 24 points.
After Southern New Hampshire scored the first six points of the game, a 9-2 run from Assumption – highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Vujadinovic – put the visitors in front, 9-8, less than four minutes into the contest. Following three ties and a pair of lead changes, four points from Walters and a trey from Russo put SNHU in front, 27-23, with under five minutes remaining. The margin was still four at the end of the half before Floras pulled up from deep and drilled a 3 prior to the buzzer that gave the Penmen a 35-28 advantage at the break.
SNHU came flying out of the locker room with a 12-2 run that featured six points from Andrews and four from Walters, and increased the lead to 47-30 less than four minutes in. After Assumption crept to within 12, four points from Floras powered a 10-3 run that gave the Penmen their largest lead of the afternoon at 59-40 with 8:28 remaining.
The Greyhounds answered with a 20-7 barrage – with eight points from Vujadinovic – to slash their deficit to 66-60 with 3:26 to go. A right-elbow jumper from Russo would stop the bleeding and spark a 6-1 run that widened the gap to double digits at 72-61 with just over a minute to play. Assumption would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Senior Scott Toresco (Westfield, N.J.) chimed in with six points (2-3 FG, 2-2 FT) and two rebounds, while sophomore Ryogo Sumino (Kanagawa, Japan) added four points (1-3 FG, 2-4 FT) and a pair of boards.
-Southern New Hampshire improves to 8-0 for the first time since 2003-04 when it started 9-0.
-Andrews' double-double is his third of the season and seventh of his career.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot Assumption, 53.2 percent (25-47) to 47.9 percent (23-48), including 33.3 percent (5-15) to 30.8 percent (8-26) from behind the arc.
-SNHU was also plus-10 at the line, outshooting Assumption, 72.4 percent (21-29) to 57.9 percent (11-19).
-The Penmen won the glass (28-25) and held a 22-14 advantage in points off turnovers, while the Greyhounds captured the paint (28-26) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (11/17-6/13).
The Penmen return to action Wednesday, Dec. 6 (7:30 p.m.) when they take on Bentley University. The next home game for SNHU is Saturday, Dec. 9 (3:30 p.m.) when they play host to Stonehill College at the Fieldhouse.
