MANCHESTER, N.H.—The Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-7 non-conference decision to the third-ranked Golden Lions of Dowling College on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field. The loss drops the Penmen to 3-9 on the season, while the win boosts the Golden Lions to 10-1.
The Penmen were led offensively by John Cuozzo (Norfolk, Mass.), who scored three times on the afternoon. James Sabino (Danvers, Mass.) scored once and dished out two assists, while Matthew Langill (Billerica, Mass.) also handed out two helpers.
For the Golden Lions, Vito DeMola, Michael Brennan, and Brendan Hayes all finished with three goals. Danny Abbene added a goal and two assists, while five different players added single goals.
The Penmen would take a 3-2 lead after one quarter of action, but Dowling would open the second quarter with three-straight goals to take the 5-3 lead. Corey Allen (Suffield, Conn.) would score with 6:08 to play in the second quarter to bring the Penmen back within one.
The two teams would trade goals for the first half of the third period, but Dowling would score five-straight goals to end the third quarter with the 12-6 lead. The Golden Lions outscored the Penmen 4-1 in the final quarter to clinch the 15-7 victory.
Brendan O'Brien (Hopkinton, Mass.) totaled 11 saves in the loss for the Penmen, while Golden Lions goaltender Ryan Dougherty posted 10 saves in the win.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to the College of Saint Rose for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.
