Men's Lacrosse Falls to Molloy in Season Opener

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Molloy College by a score of 14-7 Tuesday evening in non-conference play. The Penmen are now 0-1, while Molloy is 1-1.

Jeremy Buckley (Norwell, Mass.) led the Penmen with four points, including three goals and one assist. Rob Murray (Marblehead, Mass.) scored twice and also had an assist for three points, while Crosby Nicholson (Andover, Mass.) and Corey Allen (Suffield, Conn.) each added a goal apiece.

The Penmen jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring the first four goals of the game. Murray scored back-to-back goals at the 14:07 and 13:12 mark, and Buckley and Nicholson built on the lead with goals of their own to take a 4-0 lead over the Lions. Molloy answered in the final two minutes of the frame scoring twice to cut the deficit to two goals at 4-2.

Molloy's momentum carried over into the second quarter, as the Lions scored the next three goals to take their first lead of the game at 5-4 with 8:39 left to play in the half. However, Buckley answered with his second goal of the game with just over a minute to play to tie the game at 5-5 before the break.

The Penmen did not have an answer for Molloy in the third quarter, and gave up four quick goals in the first five minutes of play, to get down 9-5. The Lions scored once more before SNHU got a pair of goals from Buckley and Allen to cut Molloy's lead to three at 10-7. But, the Lions did not let up, and closed out the third with two more tallies to go up 12-7 heading into the final quarter.

Two more unanswered goals in the fourth quarter put SNHU away, and allowed Molloy to close out on the win with a 14-7 lead.

Morgan Weireter (Oak Park, Calif.) made 21 saves in net for the Penmen, while Dan McElhinney had four for the Lions.

The Penmen return to action on Thursday, March 6 when they travel to McDaniel College to play Mount Olive for a 1:00 p.m. non-league game.
