Men's Soccer Rallies Past Bentley for NE-10 Quarterfinal Triumph
MANCHESTER, N.H. – A goal by Chris Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) with just under 22 minutes to play lifted second-seeded Southern New Hampshire University to a 2-1 win over No. 7 seed Bentley University in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Men's Soccer Championship Tuesday afternoon at Larkin Field. The Penmen, who will host third-seeded UMass Lowell on Friday at a time to be determined, won their 13th match in a row and improved to 16-2, while the Falcons, who now will await berth of a possible NCAA berth, are 9-7-2.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Southern New Hampshire tied the game 1:17 into the second half. Following a long service into the box, the ball bounced around. A Bentley defender tried to clear the ball, but Yannick Kabala (Manchester, N.H.) headed the clear attempt in for his first collegiate goal.
Just past the 68 minute mark, Ruben Resendes (Fall River, Mass.) sent a long through ball to Tsonis. Tsonis took a touch, beat the Falcon defender and went in alone on keeper Matt Reynolds and beat him for his league-leading 14th goal of the season. For Resendes, it was his 11th assist of 2011.
Bentley took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute on their first shot of the game. Justin Cirasola sent a ball from the middle out wide to Cody Osgood, who lifted a shot from 25 yards that found the upper far left corner for his fourth goal of the season.
Joey Kapinos (Ludlow, Mass.) did not make a save in goal for the Penmen, who outshot Bentley 23-4. Reynolds turned aside nine shots for the Falcons.
Southern New Hampshire defeated UMass Lowell 3-1 during the regular season in a game played on October 19 in Lowell, Mass. The trip to the semifinals marks the first for the Penmen since the 2008 season.
