When and Where: September 6, 2017 – Manchester, N.H. (Larkin Field)
Score: Southern New Hampshire University 2, Post University 1 (OT)
Records: SNHU 2-0, Post 1-1
Junior Alex Satrustegui (Pamplona, Spain) scored 6:36 into overtime to lift the 18th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against Post University on a soggy Wednesday night at Larkin Field.
With weather playing a factor and the score deadlocked at one, Southern New Hampshire pulled out the win when freshman Tom Marriott (Nottingham, England) played a long ball over the top and into the box where it skipped over two players battling to win the ball out the air and to the foot of Satrustegui, who took one touch and sent the ball into the right corner of the net, setting off a raucous celebration for the Penmen.
Following a sopping wet and scoreless first half, Southern New Hampshire finally broke through at the 51-minute mark of the match as freshman Daniel Jones (W. Hartford, Conn.) sent a pass from the left endline toward the top-right of the 6-yard box where sophomore Romain Daniellou (Brieuc, France) put a head on the ball and drilled it off the hands of Post goalkeeper Giovanni Riello and into the right side of the net.
Post gained the equalizer one second into the 61st minute as Sergio Diaz' free kick from the right flank was volleyed from the middle of the box into the back of the net by Andre Riello to even the score, 1-1.
The Penmen had a chance to go back in front midway through the 73rd minute when Daniellou sent a feed to junior Claude Diesse (Brossard, Quebec), who has a 1-on-1 with Riello, but the goalkeeper went down to smother the attempt. A minute later, SNHU goalkeeper Daniel Milton (Ajax, Ontario) made a diving stop on a Nicholas Strecker bid from in close to keep it tied.
Southern New Hampshire's most dangerous chance came in the 79th minute when Daniellou put a header on net that Riello narrowly was able to get his fingertips on, knocking the ball away as he sprawled to his left.
With just under a minute remaining in regulation, the Penmen had another opportunity as Marriott fired a hard cross from left to right across the box and senior Michael Rowley (Cooperstown, N.Y.) fully outstretched to try and get his head on the ball, but came up just short.
Milton made three saves in the victory, while Riello turned aside four shots.
- The Penmen begin the season 2-0 for the fourth straight year.
- Daniellou's goal was his first of the season and fourth of his career, while Satrustegui's was his second in his first year with the Penmen.
- Southern New Hampshire held a 14-10 advantage in shots, including 6-3 in the opening stanza, while Post owned a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Penmen return to action Saturday, Sept. 9 (1 p.m.) when they take on Molloy College. SNHU is back home to open Northeast-10 play Wednesday, Sept. 13 (7 p.m.) when it hosts crosstown rival Saint Anselm College at Larkin.
