MANSFIELD, Mass. – Junior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was selected as the Northeast-10 Player of the Week for the period ending April 16, the league office announced Tuesday.
Fernandes, who earns the award for the second consecutive week, went 4-0 during the week to help the Penmen earn their second straight NE10 Regular-Season Championship and undefeated conference slate. Fernandes made quick work of Frank Vega, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and notched a 9-7 No. 1 doubles win against Mikhail Belov and Nick Majewski with junior Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) in the 5-2 win at Merrimack College on Wednesday. Fernandes then breezed past Bentley University's Brendan McCarthy, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and also captured an 8-1 No. 1 doubles win against McCarthy and George Samander in the 5-4 victory over the Falcons on Friday.
Fernandes is 16-4 in singles play this season, including a perfect 9-0 in league play. He holds the same 9-0 conference mark in doubles action, while he is 14-6, overall, and an unblemished 8-0 when paired with Marreiros.
Fernandes and the top-seeded Penmen return to action Thursday, April 20 (2 p.m.) when they take on the winner of Tuesday's match between fourth-seeded Bentley and fifth-seeded Le Moyne College in an NE10 Championship semifinal match at the SNHU Tennis Courts.
