Fernandes Recognized as Northeast-10 Player of the Year for Second Straight Season

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Senior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was named the Northeast-10 Vern Cox Player of the Year for the second straight season Wednesday to highlight a league-high five All-Conference selections, including First Team selections at singles spots one through five.

Fernandes, who became the second NE10 Player of the Year from SNHU last season and the first since 2011, repeats to make it three straight back-to-back winners, joining American International College's Cass Schwab (2013-14) and Adelphi University's Matteo Cannavera (2015-16).

Fernandes was also selected to the NE10 All-Conference First Team for the third consecutive year, doing so at No. 1 singles, where he is 14-5 this season, including a perfect 9-0 in league play. Overall, Fernandes is 20-6 in singles, has won nine straight, and is one win shy of matching the single-season program record for victories.

Senior Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) joined his classmate and countryman on the First Team, with a nod at No. 2 singles. Marreiros went an unblemished 9-0 in that spot this season in conference play and is 10-9 at the second flight, overall. He earns the third All-Conference honor of his career, including the second straight First Team award.

Fellow senior Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) was also a First Teamer at No. 3 singles after also producing a 9-0 mark during NE10 play. Marreiros, who is 16-10, overall, including 12-7, at No. 3, captures his third All-Conference nod, including second First Team honor.

Graduate student Xavier Aubron (Herouville, France) continued the run of First Team accolades for the Penmen with recognition at No. 4 singles. Aubron, who received All-Conference accolades on two previous occasions, including one First Team honor, is 17-7 on the season, including 14-5 at No. 4 and a perfect 8-1 conference mark at the fourth flight.

Sophomore Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) wrapped up the individual honors for the Penmen with a No. 5 First Team selection. van Biezen, who receives the first All-Conference recognition of his career, is having one of the best seasons in program history, going 20-2, overall, including 17-1 out of the No. 5 slot and a perfect 9-0 there in league play. van Biezen, who needs one more win to match the program record for victories in a single season, has captured 14 straight.

The Penmen also took home a pair of doubles honors, with Aubron and van Biezen making the Second Team at No. 1 doubles, and Fernandes and senior Jeremy Reichentahl (Cheshire, Conn.) joining them at No. 3 doubles. Aubron and van Biezen are 19-7 together this season, including 8-1 during NE10 play and 5-1 at the No. 1 spot in league action. Fernandes and Reichentahl have gone 11-3 as a duo this year, including a perfect 6-0 mark at No. 3 during conference play. The Marreiros brothers narrowly missed out on a No. 2 Third Team nod, falling one victory short.

The top-seeded Penmen return to action Thursday, April 19 (9 a.m.) when they take on fifth-seeded Bentley University in an NE10 Championship semifinal match at the Executive Health & Sports Center in Manchester.
