MANSFIELD, Mass. – Senior Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team garnered Northeast-10 Player of the Week honors for the period ending April 15, the league office announced Wednesday.
It is the fifth weekly honor for Fernandes, who also captured the award Sept. 26, Oct. 17, March 27 and April 11, and was named the NE10 Player of the Year for the second straight season earlier Wednesday. Fernandes went a perfect 8-0 last week, including 4-0 at No. 1 singles, as the Penmen finished 4-0 en route to locking up their third straight NE10 regular-season title. Fernandes toppled Roberto Chong, 6-0, 6-0, in a 9-0 win against Franklin Pierce University on Monday and then was a 6-1, 6-2 winner against Assumption College's Ryan Foster, as part of a 9-0 win over the Greyhounds on Wednesday. Fernandes came back Thursday in a 6-3 victory at Bentley University and posted a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Brendan McCarthy. In a 7-2 defeat of Merrimack College to lock up the regular-season championship, Fernandes downed Mikhail Belov, 6-3, 6-2. Fernandes also teamed with classmate Jeremy Reichentahl for a quarter of No. 3 doubles wins, including 8-4 against FPU's James Bisazza and Matthew Toombs, 8-0 over Assumption's Jameson Keppeler and Luke Whitehouse, 8-4 against Bentley's Connor Aulson and Dylan Granat, and 8-1 over Merrimack's Tyler Clontz and Paul Weidinger.
Fernandes and the top-seeded Penmen return to action Thursday, April 19 (9 a.m.) when they take on fifth-seeded Bentley University in an NE10 Championship semifinal match at the Executive Health & Sports Center in Manchester.
