Fernandes, Vacalares Sweep NE10 Men’s Tennis Weekly Awards

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team were chosen as the Northeast-10 Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the period ending Oct. 21, the conference office announced Tuesday. 

Fernandes, who earns his second straight NE10 Player of the Week honor, downed Ethan Hall at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, as the Penmen won their only match of the week with a 7-0 shutout of Saint Anselm College on Friday.

Vacalares captured both of his matches against the crosstown-rival Hawks, as he defeated Michael Rosen, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and also teamed with classmate Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) at No. 3 doubles for a 6-1 triumph over Jason Wood and Richard Flandreau.

Fernandes and Vacalares are each 3-0 in singles play, including 1-0 in the league. Fernandes is 1-0 at doubles, with Vacalares coming in at 2-1.

Fernandes, Vacalares and the Penmen are now off until the spring.
