MANCHESTER, N.H. – Graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal), and juniors Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team became the program's first individuals ever to be nationally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) last week.
Fernandes is the 48th-ranked player in the country in Division II and was placed second in the East Region. Fernandes, who made it all the way to the singles bracket finals of the ITA East Regional Championships back in September, is 7-1 this season.
The van Biezen brothers are the 25th-ranked doubles tandem in the nation and were also ranked second in the region. The van Biezens, who also breezed to the final of the doubles bracket at the ITA East Regional Championships, have racked up a 7-1 mark, thus far.
Fernandes and freshman Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) are also regionally ranked as a doubles unit, checking in at No. 7. The duo is 4-1 this year and advanced to the quarterfinal round at ITAs.
