Barone's Three-Hitter Leads #17 SNHU Softball Past Merrimack 2-0

Records: SNHU 36-10 (20-5 NE10, 14-5 NE10 Northeast), Merrimack 22-22 (13-12 NE10, 11-8 NE10 Northeast)

Top Performers:
- Junior Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) tossed a three-hit shutout to improve to 18-4.  She walked one and struck out eight batters.
- Barone and senior Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) each had two hits to lead the Penmen.
- Junior Jordan Wade (East Taunton, Mass.) had the game's lone RBI in the first inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the top of the first inning, Garczynski reached on an error, landing at third.  Wade singled to put the Penmen up 1-0.
- Merrimack's Tiffany Mangiameli led off the bottom of the first with a base hit - it would be the only hit for the Warriors until the seventh inning.
- SNHU extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning.  Garczynski led off with a double, moving to third on a fly out.  A passed ball two pitches later allowed her to score.
- Merrimack loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't find the timely hit.
- Freshman Jenna Wike (L, 7-5) pitched a complete game for Merrimack, giving up six hits and two runs, neither of which were earned.

Notes:
- SNHU has locked up second place in the Northeast Division with the win. 
- The Penmen have won by shutout 13 times this season.  Barone has six of them - sophomore Olivia Strasser (Rutland, Mass.) leads the team with seven. The team ERA is 1.24.
- With two hits, Garczynski has 232 for her career at SNHU.  The program's all-time hit leader, Ali Maloof, had 234 from 2012-15.

What's Next:
- The Penmen will conclude the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday at Merrimack.  First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
