MANSFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Makyla Lewellen (Zainesville, Ohio) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's golf team was selected as the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year on Tuesday when the league office announced its end-of-the-year awards.
Lewellen, a four-time NE10 Rookie of the Week honoree this season, becomes the first major award winner in the history of the program and also earned a spot on the NE10 All-Conference Second Team. Lewellen led the team with an 86.5 average across 18 rounds and turned in three top-10 finishes, including a top-five showing, in the nine events she competed in. Lewellen opened her career by placing eighth at the Penmen Labor Day Classic on Sept. 4, shooting a 161 that included her lowest round of the season with a 78 on day two. She finished runner-up with an 86 Sept. 21 in a dual-match versus Post University and was eighth again with a 166 at the Martin & Wallace Invitational on Oct. 1. Lewellen also slotted in 14thwith a two-day total of 170 at the NE10 Championship on Sept. 25.
