Juniors Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) and Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal), as well as freshman Casey Burns (Westbrook, Conn.), all won both their matches for the second straight contest, as the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team posted a 6-3 victory against Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon at the SNHU Tennis Courts.
Southern New Hampshire grabbed a 1-0 lead when junior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) and Morais blanked Melissa Wood and Katie Costa, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles. After Saint Michael's tied it with a win at No. 2, the Penmen took a 2-1 lead into singles play, as Sala and Burns defeated Abby Ramsay and Margaret de Pont, 8-3, at No. 1.
Sala made it 3-1, easily taking down de Pont, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, before Burns nudged the Penmen lead to 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Amelia Weeks. Morais clinched the match at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph against Ramsay.
After the Purple Knights won at No. 3 singles, senior Lindsay Baum (No. Salem, N.Y.) cruised past Caroline Sumner, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 to make it 6-2. Saint Michael's capped the match with a win at No. 6.
- Sala has now won eight straight dual-match singles bouts.
- Wagner, who had missed the previous four matches, returned at No. 3 doubles, but did not suit up yet for a singles match.
The Penmen return to action Tuesday, Oct. 17 (3 p.m.) when they take on Bentley University at Brandeis University. The next home match for SNHU is Wednesday, Oct. 18 (3 p.m.) when they play host to Assumption College at the SNHU Tennis Courts.
