Senior Marisa Coronis (Hudson, N.H.) piled up 17 kills and 10 digs, but the Southern New Hampshire University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 17-15, 25-16, 25-17) decision to Stonehill College on Tuesday evening at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Trailing 4-3 in the opening set, Southern New Hampshire used a 10-2 run – with four kills and a block from Coronis – to catapult into the lead at 13-6. Stonehill crafted an 8-1 counter-run, however, to knot the match at 14-all. Another Coronis kill would put the Penmen in front, 19-18, but it would be their final lead of the stanza, as Stonehill would close the set on a 7-3 run to go up 1-0 in the match.
Two kills from Coronis, along with a kill and two service aces from junior Jessica Dillon (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), carried a set-opening 12-4 run for SNHU. Stonehill went on a 9-3 counter-run to trim its deficit to 15-13, but three kills from Coronis and two more aces from Dillon highlighted a 6-2 spurt that gave the Penmen some breathing room at 21-15. The Skyhawks would stop the bleeding with two straight points, but kills from Dillon, and sophomores Jaclyn Maguire (Rochester, N.Y.) and Amanda Costales (Wantagh, N.Y.), would buoy a 4-0 run to end the set and tie the match.
With set No. 3 even, 4-4, a 7-1 Stonehill run would give it an 11-5 advantage. SNHU would trim its deficit to 13-9 before a 6-2 spurt opened the Skyhawk lead to 19-11. A pair of Coronis kills would power a 4-1 run that made it 20-15, but Stonehill would score five of the final six points to take the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was tied at nine when kills from Maguire and Costales made up the first two points of a three-point run that pushed the Penmen in front, 12-9. The lead was 16-14 when Stonehill would rip off 10 straight points as part of an 11-1 blitz that ended the set and clinched the match.
Dillon did a little bit of everything with eight kills, four service aces, nine assists and 11 digs, while Costales chipped in six kills, three digs and two blocks.
