MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern New Hampshire University broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the eighth inning en route to an 8-5 Northeast-10 baseball victory over The College of Saint Rose at Penmen Field Tuesday afternoon. The Penmen improved to 14-22-1 overall and 10-15-1 in the NE-10 with the win, while the Golden Knights fall to 19-14 and 12-14 in the league.
Southern New Hampshire scored four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of five Saint Rose errors and a walk. Joe Gargan (Hudson, NH) had a sacrifice fly to right, while Scott Strong (Naperville, IL) followed it up with a single to center that plate Curtis Burke (Bristol, RI).
Saint Rose would load the bases with no one out in the top of the ninth, but relief pitcher Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, NH) got Jake Perez to ground into a double play, with Garret Keenan coming in the back door. Monroe would then get Dominick Iaconis to strike out looking to end the game.
SNHU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Bobby Wronski (Arlington, MA) doubled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a single through the left side by Jeff Giannino (Beverly, MA). The Golden Knights would tie the game on a solo home run to center by Derek Marshall in the fifth, but Wronski would deliver a two-run blast in the sixth to give the Penmen a 3-1 lead. The hosts scored again in the frame when a Giannino double plated Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, MA), who had extended his hit streak to 14 games with a double after Wronski's homer.
Saint Rose closed to within 4-3 in the seventh on a two-run homer by Keenan, then tied the game one inning later when Ryan Burke worked a one-out walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Price.
Ryan Quinn (Lebanon, CT) went eight innings for the Penmen and allowed six hits while fanning 10 and issuing just two walks. Monroe earned his second save of the season. Wronski and Giannino each finished with a pair of hits as Southern New Hampshire outhit Saint Rose 7-6.
