NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Bobby Wronski (Arlington, Mass.) and Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.) each drove in a pair of runs and three Southern New Hampshire University pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout as the Penmen blanked Merrimack College 5-0 in Northeast-10 baseball Thursday afternoon at Warrior Diamond. SNHU improves to 19-17 overall and 7-9 in the NE-10, while the Warriors are now 11-19 and 3-12 in the league.
Rines finished 1-4 and delivered a two-run double in the second that gave Southern New Hampshire a 2-0 lead. Wronski belted a two-run home run in the fifth that made it 4-0, going 2-3 at the plate. Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) went 3-4 with three doubles as the Penmen outhit the Warriors 10-4.
Junior Garrett Jewell (Alexandria, N.H.) (pictured) picked up the win on the mound for the Penmen, working seven innings and allowing four hits while fanning six and walking four. He did not allow a hit until a Joe Mantoni single with one out in the fourth. David Gibson (Hanover, Mass.) and Sam Fuller (Barre, Vt.) each worked an inning of hitless relief.
In the second, Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) worked a one-out walk, then Spatkowski doubled to left to put two runners in scoring position. Following another out, Rines doubles down the left field line to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) doubled with two outs to get on before Wronski's opposite-field home run down the right field line. SNHU's other run would come in the sixth as Juan Amador (Derry, N.H.) reached on an error. He eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Travis Terrill took the loss for Merrimack, allowing seven hits and five runs (four earned) in six innings of work. Mantoni had two of the four Warrior hits on the afternoon.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Friday when it hosts Adelphi University in a Northeast-10 doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
