MANCHESTER, N.H. – Visiting Adelphi University took both ends of a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader from Southern New Hampshire University by scores of 4-2 and 5-2 Friday afternoon at Penmen Field. The Panthers improved to 24-10-2 overall and 13-5-1 in the NE-10 with the victories, while the Penmen are 19-19 and 7-11 in the league.
In the opener, Adelphi rallied with three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead. Omar Velazquez led off the inning with a double and after moving to third on a wild pitch, scored on a single by Chad Houghton. Anthony Zarella gave the guests the lead with a two-run home run to left.
Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but the Penmen posted single runs in the fifth and sixth to claim a 2-1 lead. In the fifth Juan Amador (Derry, N.H.) reached on a fielders' choice and scored on a double to right by Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.). In the sixth, Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) led off with a double to left-center and came home on a line drive single by Jon Massad (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
Wollerman led SNHU with three hits while Houghton and Zarella had three hits apiece for Adelphi. Robert Nixon scattered 10 hits in a complete-game victory for the Panthers, striking out nine while allowing one walk. Derrick Sylvester (Franklin, N.H.) struck out seven and surrendered 11 hits in eight innings and took the loss for Southern New Hampshire.
In the nightcap Adelphi homered twice in the first three innings to take a 3-1 lead. In the first, Richard McCarren belted a two-run shot to left, while Velazquez hit a solo shot to left in the third.
SNHU cut Adelphi's lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first. Albert Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.) worked a two-out walk and scored on a opposite-field double to left by Chris O'Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.). Down 3-1 midway through the third, the Penmen would again cut the Panther lead to one with a run in the bottom of the frame. Amador worked a leadoff walk and scored on a double off the wall in center by Stanton.
The Panthers scored twice in the sixth. Velazquez singled to start the inning and scored on a McCarren single to left. McCarren would score on a double to the gap in left-center by Justin Farnum.
O'Neil had two of SNHU's four hits in the nightcap, while three players had two hits for Adelphi as the Panthers outhit the Penmen 8-4. Stephen Bove went the distance for AU allowing four hits and two runs while fanning seven and walking three. Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.) took the loss for SNHU, allowing six hits and five runs in seven innings while striking out 11.
Southern New Hampshire is idle until Tuesday, April 26 when it travels to Bentley University for a 3:30 Northeast-10 contest.
