MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.) (pictured) went 3-4 with a home run and six runs driven in as Southern New Hampshire University downed Concordia (N.Y.) College 8-3 in baseball action at the Ripken Experience Friday afternoon. The Penmen improved to 2-0, while the Clippers are 0-2 on the season.
Brad Monroe (Hampton, N.H.) picked up the win for the Penmen, working six innings and allowed four hits and two runs while striking out six. He did not allow a hit for the game's first five innings before the Clippers touched him for a pair of runs in the sixth.
SNHU staked itself to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) drove in the first run when his single plated Stanton, while Minucci made it 3-0 with his double that scored Boulter and Andy Lalli (Lakeville, Mass.). After Concordia got on the board in the sixth, Minucci led off the top of the seventh with a home run to make it 4-2.
Concordia would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-3 before the Penmen pulled away with four runs in the top of the eighth. Minucci hit a bases-loaded double that plated Stanton, Boulter and Lalli, while Minucci would later score from third on a passed ball.
Tyler Gauthier (Lynn, Mass.) worked two innings of relief for Southern New Hampshire and allowed one hit while striking out two. Lucas Olen (Bedford, N.H.) worked the ninth for the Penmen and allowed one hit.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action Saturday when it faces West Virginia Wesleyan in an 11:00 am contest at the Ripken Experience.
