MANCHESTER, N.H. – No. 12 Southern New Hampshire University took both ends of a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader against UMass Lowell Saturday, rallying for a 7-4 win in game one before nabbing a 4-2 triumph in the nightcap. The Penmen improved to 36-11 overall and 12-8 in the NE-10's Northeast Division, while the River Hawks now stand 24-17-1 and 7-9 in divisional action.
In the opener, Southern New Hampshire trailed 4-2 entering the seventh when it scored five times with the benefit of just one hit, a two-run single off the bat of Greg Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.). River Hawk hurlers hit three SNHU batters and walked two others, including an RBI walk by Matt Boulter (Wrentham, Mass.) and an RBI hit by pitch by Jon Minucci (Madison, Conn.). Jamie Wollerman (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) brought in the fifth run of the frame when his sac fly scored Minucci.
UMass Lowell took advantage of two SNHU errors to score twice in the second, then made it 3-0 in the third when Zach Berger was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Penmen got a run back in the bottom of the third when an infield single by Boulter brought in Tyler Poisson (Rochester, N.H.), who had worked a leadoff walk.
The River Hawks added another run in the fourth when Matt Jacobs reached on a one-out double down the left field line and scored on a single by Cam Kneeland. Wollerman made it a 4-2 game in the sixth when his single through the left side brought in Boulter.
Southern New Hampshire mustered just three hits in the opener. Brad Monroe (Hampton, N.H.) got stronger as the game went on for the Penmen, allowing five hits in eight innings and recording 11 strikeouts to up his record to 7-3. He allowed just one hit after the fourth inning and retired the final seven batters he faced, five on called third strikes. Alex Powers (Brewster, Mass.) allowed one hit in the ninth en route to the save.
The Penmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game in the bottom of the first. Kevin Spatkowski (Bristol, Conn.) doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Boulter. Minucci made it 3-0 when he belted his eighth home run of the season to right-center.
The game remained 3-0 until the eighth when UMass Lowell scored its only two runs of the contest. Geoff DeGroot worked a bases-loaded walk to get the River Hawks on the board, then Kneeland delivered a sac fly to right to plate Sanchez. Powers, who came in to face Kneeland with the bases loaded and one out, got out of the inning by getting Mark Sanborn to chase a high fastball.
SNHU tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as Spatkowski led off with a double and after moving to third on a Boulter groundout, came home on an opposite-field triple by Minucci. Powers picked up his second save of the afternoon by working a 1-2-3 ninth.
Minucci finished 3-4 in the nightcap while Spatkowski and Boulter had two hits apiece as the Penmen outhit the River Hawks 10-3. Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) upped his record to 4-0 with 7.1 innings of three-hit baseball. He did hurt himself with five walks on the afternoon against two strikeouts.
Southern New Hampshire and UMass Lowell close out their three-game series Sunday at noon at Penmen Field, with the game being Senior Day for the Penmen.
