Helms, Viehoff Add NCBWA East Region Weekly Awards to List

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Junior Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn.) of the fifth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team was selected as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Player of the Week, while senior Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H.) was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Week, for the period ending April 24, it was announced Wednesday.

Helms, who earned both Northeast-10 and NEIBA Player of the Week honors Monday, batted 12-for-23 with five extra-base hits, a home run, seven RBI and nine runs scored during a 6-0 week for the Penmen. Helms, who produced an eye-popping slash line of .522/.613/.826/1.439, played errorless defense in center field and went 4-for-4 swiping bags. Helms was 3-for-3 with a home run, four RBI and a run scored in an 11-0 victory against Southern Connecticut State University in game one Friday and then went 3-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored in Saturday's 20-14 win at Merrimack College.

Viehoff, who earns the award for the second time this season after nabbing his second NE-10 and NEIBA Pitcher of the Week on Monday, went 1-0 with a 0.60 ERA in two appearances during the week. Over 15 innings, Viehoff allowed just two runs – one earned – on five hits, while striking out 23 and walking just five. Opponents batted just .098 against the left-hander. Viehoff tossed seven innings of one-run ball, giving up just two hits, while punching out 13 and walking two in an 8-1 victory at Saint Michael's College on Tuesday. Viehoff came back Sunday against Merrimack and relinquished just one unearned run on three hits, striking out 10 and walking three over eight innings. Viehoff left with a 3-1 lead, but the bullpen could not hold it and SNHU eventually won, 5-3, in 10 innings.

In 40 games this season, Helms is hitting .367 (54-147) with six home runs, 34 RBI and 45 runs scored. The captain has registered 22 extra-base hits, including 13 doubles, to go along with a slash line of .455/619/1.074. Helms is also 17-for-20 in stolen base attempts.

Helms ranks second in the Northeast-10 in runs, extra-base hits and doubles, while ranking third in slugging percentage, fourth in hits, batting average and on-base percentage, fifth in home runs, seventh in RBI and ninth in stolen bases. Viehoff is tied for the league lead in wins, places first in ERA and is second in strikeouts.
