Sophomore Jill Piacitelli (East Greenwich, R.I.) stopped 14 shots, but a Mia Vecchione goal with just over three minutes left in regulation lifted No. 9 Saint Anselm College to a 2-1 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Wednesday.
The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first half, as Emma Kincaid fed a centering pass to Jamie McNamara that was one-timed to the back of the cage with 10:44 to play.
The Penmen were able to knot the score at 26:40 of the second half when freshman Cassidy Huckins (Boscawen, N.H.) slammed home a feed from graduate student Alanna Lovejoy (Derry, N.H.) to make it a one-all game.
Katie Neyland set up the eventual game-winner with 3:02 left in regulation, as she teed up a shot that was redirected home by Vecchione to give Saint Anselm to 2-1 victory.
- The Hawks held a 28-3 edge in shots and a 24-3 advantage in penalty corners.
- Piacitelli's 14 saves were one shy of her season-high of 15 set at Stonehill College on September 12.
- Saint Anselm picked up a point in the Queen City Cup standings, evening the score between the two intracity rivals in 2015-2016.
Southern New Hampshire continues Northeast-10 play on Saturday when it heads to American International College for a 6 p.m. faceoff with the Yellow Jackets.
