MANCHESTER, N.H. – Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) paced the Southern New Hampshire men's basketball team with 21 points in a 77-60 win over American International College Saturday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Penmen improve to 7-6 overall and 5-5 in the league, while the Yellow Jackets are now 6-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Three different players finished in double digits for the Penmen. Bonsignore led all scorers with 21 on 9-14 from the field and 3-4 from behind the arc. He also added seven rebounds. Mike Stys (Manchester, N.H.) finished with 14, and was perfect from the three (3-3), while Phillip Tripodakis (Athens, Greece) added 10 points, including three three-pointers.
Despite a 45-minute delay due to a leak in the roof, the Penmen were able to build a comfortable lead in the first half over American Int'l. The Yellow Jackets took a quick 5-0 lead in the first minute of the half, but SNHU answered with a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes. Bonsignore scored seven of the 14 points, including one of his three pointers. The scoring continued for the Penmen, as they took a nine point lead at the 2:09 mark when Stys converted two free throws after an AIC technical foul, and then followed with a basket from behind the arc to give the hosts a 33-24 lead. Chris Walters (Stamford, Conn.) drained two of his eight points from the free throw line right before the half to give SNHU a 40-24 lead.
The Penmen continued to build on their lead in the second half, and led by as many as 24 points at the 13:38 mark. Bonsignore led all scorers in the half with 12 points, including 2-2 from behind the arc.
As a team, SNHU shot 50% from the three-point line (10-20), and 47.6% from the field (30-63).
The Penmen return to action Tuesday, January 14 when they host Pace University for a 7:30 p.m. conference game.
