GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Freshman Chris Walters (Stamford, Conn.) led Southern New Hampshire University in scoring for the second straight game with 14 points as the Penmen recorded a 60-50 men's basketball victory over Adelphi University at the Center for Recreation and Sport Wednesday night. SNHU won its fifth straight to improve to 10-6 and 8-5 in the NE-10, while the Panthers are now 4-13 and 2-9 in the league.
Walters finished 4-8 from the floor and 5-8 from the free throw line while also grabbing seven rebounds. Rodney Sanders (Linden, N.J.) finished with 12 points, while Mike Stys (Hooksett, N.H.) added 10 points.
Anthony Libroia was the lone Panther to finish in double figures as he totaled 19 points and nine rebounds.
Trailing 27-23 early in the second half, Southern New Hampshire used a 14-4 run capped by a three by Nikola Canic (Belgrade, Serbia) with 12:24 left to build a 37-31 lead. The Panthers drew within four, 41-37, with 7:35 left on a pair of free throws following a Penmen technical foul, but SNHU embarked on a 8-1 run, and a layup by Elijah Bonsignore (Felton, Del.) with 3:22 left gave the guests a 49-38 lead. The Penmen held Adelphi with a field goal for over six minutes and maintained a six-point cushion the rest of the way.
Adelphi held an 20-15 lead with just over four minutes left in the first half, but SNHU held the Panthers without a field goal over the final 5:25 of the opening frame, and a three-pointer by Stys to beat the buzzer tied the game 21-21 headed into the locker room.
Southern New Hampshire shot 36.7% from the floor and connected on just six of its 27 three-point attempts, but took nine more trips to the free throw line and went 18-28, while Adelphi was 12-19 at the stripe. The Panthers, who outrebounded the Penmen 42-32, shot just 33.3% for the game and were 4-19 behind the arc.
SNHU returns to action Saturday, January 25, when SNHU welcomes Le Moyne College for a 3:30 tipoff at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
