Senior Daquaise Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) and junior Eamonn Joyce (Medford, Mass.) each scored 14 points, but the Southern New Hampshire University men's basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 66-60 loss to Assumption College on Tuesday night at the Stan Spirou Field House.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Andrews endured a tough shooting night, going 4-for-23 from the field, including 1-for-7 from beyond the arc, and 5-for-8 from the line, to go with five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
  • Joyce went 6-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the stripe, while grabbing three rebounds and blocking a shot.
  • Junior Shawn Montague (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine points (4-8 FG, 1-4 FT) and 10 rebounds, in addition to matching his career high with four steals.
  • Matthew Kelly led all scorers for the Greyhounds with 24 points (9-16 FG, 2-8 3-FG, 4-5 FT).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A 3-pointer from senior Charlie Russo (Syracuse, N.Y.) started the game out on the right foot for Southern New Hampshire, which outscored Assumption, 7-2, over the opening minute – with Russo tallying the first five. A 7-2 counter-run from the Greyhounds left the game tied three minutes later, and four straight later in the first half gave the visitors their first lead at 15-14 with 12:13 remaining.
  • Five ties and four lead changes then ensued over the following nine minutes, with SNHU not holding a lead from the 10:04 mark until 2:32 remained before the break. That's when Andrews canned a triple that sparked a stanza-ending 7-0 run – with five from Andrews – to give the Penmen a 34-29 lead going to the locker room.
  • Assumption came out of the intermission on a 10-2 run – powered by a pair of treys from Kelly – to go in front, 39-36, just over three minutes in. With the margin still three with close to 13 minutes on the clock, six straight gave the Penmen the lead again at 44-41 with 12:05 to play.
  • The contest would see five more lead changes over the next six minutes, with the Greyhounds taking a 54-52 lead with nearly five minutes left. A big three-point play from Joyce gave SNHU the lead back at 55-54 with 4:14 remaining, but it would be the hosts' final advantage of the night.
  • Assumption followed with a 10-2 blitz to crack open its largest lead of the contest at 64-57 with 37 seconds on the clock. A Russo layup made it a five-point game and, after Assumption missed the front end of a 1-and-1, an Andrews layup would make it 64-60 with 19 seconds to go. A second free throw that would have made it a one-possession game would not go down, however, and Kelly drilled a pair of freebies at the other end to seal it.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Assumption outshot Southern New Hampshire, 49.1 percent (26-53) to 36.9 percent (24-65), including 23.8 percent (5-21) to 10.5 percent (2-19) from long range.
  • SNHU was plus-1 from the line, while Assumption shot it better, 81.8 percent (9-11) to 62.5 percent (10-16).
  • The Penmen collected more points off mistakes (14-9) and turned in a better assist-to-turnover ratio (12/8-14/15), while the Greyhounds won the glass (39-34) and received more bench scoring (17-8). The paint (42-42) and second chance points (7-7) were both all square.
  • Senior Remo Simankevicius (Melbourne, Australia) posted eight points (4-6 FG), a season-high seven rebounds, two assists and a block.
  • Freshman Mikey Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) matched his career best with eight points (4-7 FG), to go with four assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
  • Russo tallied seven points (2-11 FG, 1-7 3-FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, two helpers and a steal.

NOTES

  • Southern New Hampshire loses its fourth straight, while Assumption caps its year with its second straight win.
  • The loss snaps SNHU's 11-game winning streak against Assumption, as it falls to the Greyhounds for the first time since March 16, 2013 (73-65).
  • Despite Saint Anselm College defeating Stonehill College to leave the door open for the Penmen to claim a spot in the Northeast-10 postseason, the loss kept SNHU and Stonehill tied for the fifth spot in the Northeast Division standings. Unfortunately for the Penmen, the Skyhawks owned the tiebreaker via their better record during the regular season against the Northeast Division's No. 2 seed, Merrimack College. Southern New Hampshire and Stonehill split the season series and were both winless against the division's top seed, Saint Anselm College, sending it to a third tiebreaker.
  • Andrews' wraps up his stellar career in 12th place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,653 points – just one shy of the 11th slot.
  • Seniors Andrews, Russo and Simankevicius were honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
