The Southern New Hampshire University men's golf team downed Le Moyne College in a playoff to capture the 2015 Northeast-10 Men's Golf Championship Monday after the two teams finished tied for first.
The playoff was decided on the 345-yard, par 4 10th hole. Le Moyne posted four pars and a bogey on the hole, with the low score dropped, while Jake Nutter (Bedford, N.H.) birdied the hole to go along with three pars and a double bogey for the Penmen to claim the crown.
Freshman Gavin Dugas (Pittsfield, Maine) led Southern New Hampshire and earned NE-10 Rookie of the Year honors as well as being named to the All-Conference First Team. He tied for the round two lead with a four-under 68 and finished with a two-day total of 142 (-2) to finish third overall, two shots behind medalist John Clare of Le Moyne. Dugas posted five birdies and just one bogey in Monday's round.
Three other Penmen earned NE-10 All-Conference honors as well. Joshua LaCasse (Bow, N.H.) finished tied for sixth, shooting a 72 on Monday and recording a two-day total of 145. John Clancy (Sandwich, Mass.) placed eighth, registering a 74 Monday and finishing two-over 146 for the tournament, while Nutter tied for ninth at 148 after registering a 77 in round two.
SNHU coach Matt Arvanitis was also named the Northeast-10 Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.
- The men's golf championship for Southern New Hampshire is its first NE-10 crown since capturing back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.
- Defending champion Bentley University finished third, three shots behind SNHU and Le Moyne. The College of Saint Rose (599) and Assumption College (624) rounded out the top five.
- The title earns SNHU an automatic berth into next spring's NCAA Atlantic/East Regional, which will be held May 2-4 at Timber Banks Golf Club in Baldwinsville, N.Y.
Men's golf is back in action Friday and Saturday at the Saint Rose Fall Shootout.
