PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Host Salve Regina University scored twice in the final 5:33 to nail down a 4-2 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Southern New Hampshire University Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks improve to 6-9-2 overall and 4-5-1 in the league, while the Penmen are now 8-8-1 and 5-6-1 in ECAC play.
The Penmen took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when John Frey (Westminster, CO) scored at the 10:10 mark. Ryan DiBartolomeo (Leominster, MA) and Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, ALB) assisted on the goal. The Seahawks would score seven seconds later on an unassisted goal from Mike Mallette to tie the game 1-1. SNHU would take a 2-1 lead 3:36 before the first intermission when DiBartolomeo notched a power play tally. Hammermeister and Frey assisted on the goal.
Salve Regina would score the lone goal of the second period at the 12:52 mark when Tyler Trott scored, with Zach Suflika and Joe Colaianni assisting. The Seahawks would take their first lead of the game at the 15:27 mark of the third period when Patrick Bambery recorded his seventh goal of the year. Trott would add an empty net goal with two seconds remaining to account for the 4-2 final.
SRU netminder turned aside 31 shots for the Seahawks as the hosts generated a 37-33 shot advantage. Todd Rowley (Billerica, MA) made 33 saves for the Penmen. SNHU was 1-4 on the power play while Salve Regina was 1-3.
SNHU returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts Saint Michael's College in a 7:30 Northeast-10 Conference contest at The Ice Den.
