Sophomore Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) registered 38 saves and senior Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) provided the offense, as the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team picked up a 1-0 win over Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at the Ice Den on Saturday. The Penmen remain unbeaten in the NE-10 at 2-0-1 and improve to 2-4-1 overall, while the Greyhounds fall to 1-2 in the league and 1-3-1 in 2015-16.
The two teams battled to a scoreless first period before Gabrione was able to score the game's lone goal at 9:20 of the second stanza. Sophomore Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.) picked up a loose puck at the Southern New Hampshire blue line and sent a rink-wide pass to classmate Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.) on the leftwing. Valliere moved into the corner before finding a trailing Gabrione in the slot for a one-timer to the far post that beat Nick Commesso.
Slatky would make the lead stand for the remainder of the evening, as he stopped 21 shots over the final 30:40, including 12 in the third period, to pick up his first career shutout and second victory of season.
- Slatky notched at least 30 saves for the third time this season, and he has generated a .935 save-percentage or better in four consecutive contests.
- Gabrione extended his personal point streak to four straight games and has tallied seven points over that stretch.
- The Penmen were outshot 38-26 in the game and 26-15 in the final two periods.
Southern New Hampshire travels to Saint Anselm College on Tuesday (Nov. 24) for a Northeast-10 and Queen City Cup tilt at 7 p.m. before returning home to the Ice Den for the Manchester Police Athletic League Stovepipe Tournament on Nov. 28 and 29.
