Sophomore Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) registered a career-high 52 saves to backstop the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team to a 6-3 victory against Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Charles J. Buffone Arena on Saturday.
Slatky stopped 14 shots in the first period before turning aside 19 in both the second and third periods, as the Penmen were outshot by a 55-28 margin. He eclipsed his previous career-best of 45 saves, which was set against Fredonia State on Jan. 6, 2015 and matched on Oct. 24 of this year versus Arizona State University.
The Penmen struck for the game's first goal less than five minutes into the contest, as sophomore Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.) deposited his sixth of the year into the back of the Greyhound net. The lead increased to a pair just over 10 minutes later when sophomore Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.) collected a powerplay tally at 15:12 with help from freshman Dylan Sobczyk (Buford, Ga.) and sophomore Kevin Lorcher (Rouen, France). Assumption was able to trim the Southern New Hampshire lead to a single goal with under a minute to play in the first on Brian Farrell's second of the season.
Junior Michael Busconi (Watertown, Mass.) reestablished the two-goal edge early in the second before senior Paul Pirozzo (North Babylon, N.Y.) potted what proved the be the game-winner. Pirozzo converted on the man advantage midway through the middle stanza to give the visiting Penmen a 4-1 cushion. The Greyhounds refused to go quietly into the locker room, however, as Ryan Gomez brought the hosts back within two with his first of the 2015-16 campaign with 4:48 left to play in the period.
After the score remained unchanged for the first 13 minutes of the third, Assumption climbed back within one on Farrell's second of the night with 6:52 left in regulation. It would be as close as the Greyhounds would come, as junior Devin Murray (Saugus, Mass.) added an insurance goal at 16:49 before classmate Nathan Bergeron (Auburn, Maine) put the game out of reach with his first just 33 seconds later.
Pirozzo and Valliere each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Southern New Hampshire offense. Lorcher chipped in with a pair of helpers, and the Penmen received single assists from sophomore Matt McLelland (Reading, Mass.), junior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.), and seniors Anthony Laperriere (Winchendon, Mass.) and Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.).
- The Penmen finished 2-for-5 on the powerplay, while the Greyhounds were successful on two of their three man-advantage opportunities. Assumption also held a slight 41-38 edge in faceoffs.
- Slatky recorded at least 40 saves for the third time this season and the fourth time in his career.
- Pirozzo has turned in multi-point outings in two of his last three games, and has six points during that stretch.
Southern New Hampshire is back in action on Tuesday evening when it travels to Nichols College for a non-conference clash at 8:10 p.m.
