Junior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) scored twice on Saturday, but a three-goal second period led Morrisville State College to a 5-3 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in non-conference ice hockey action at the Ice Den.

Jordan Carvalho led the Mustangs' offense with a goal and two assists, and CJ Sharp earned the win in goal after stopping 26 of the 29 shots in which he faced.

Morrisville State skated to an early two-goal advantage in the the first, as it notched the game's first two scores in the opening 6:11. Brett Jonson opened the scoring at 2:04 after he took a feed from Jimmy Philbin and rifled a wrist shot just inside the far post. The visitors doubled their advantage 4:07 later when Darren Young collected a pass from Carvalho on the doorstep and deposited his fifth of the season into the back of the net.

The Penmen cut the deficit in half midway through the period on sophomore Timothy Baylis' (West Haven, Conn.) fifth marker of the year. Junior Nathan Bergeron (Auburn, Maine) setup the play after he blocked a shot and sprung Baylis in on a breakaway that was finished with a backhand through Sharp's five-hole at 11:29.

Ian Wood regained the Mustangs' two-goal lead early in the second with his third of the season at 2:23. Danny Liscio carried the puck into the Southern New Hampshire zone before sliding a tape-to-tape feed onto the stick of a cutting Wood at the far post, and he tipped it into the net to make it 3-1.

Less than five minutes later, Sylvia tallied a powerplay goal to trim the disadvantage back to a single score. Sylvia camped himself in front of the Morrisville State goal and redirected a chest-high wrist shot by sophomore Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.) to the bottom corner of the cage with 12:48 to play in the stanza.

The Mustangs netted what proved to be the game-winner just 35 seconds later, as Young returned the favor to Carvalho by setting him up for his fourth of the year. Morrisville State added an insurance goal at 15:02 of the second when Joseph Santino pushed the lead to 5-2 with help from Carvalho and Hefner.

The score remained unchanged until 12:01 of the third before Sylvia potted his second of the afternoon. Senior Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) weaved his way from the Penmen end of the ice through the neutral zone and into the slot, where he left the puck for Sylvia to tuck between Sharp's pads.
