Senior Jim Gabrione (Boca Raton, Fla.) notched the 100th point of his career, and sophomore Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) stopped 39 shots as the Southern New Hampshire University ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Franklin Pierce University at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena on Saturday night.
With the Penmen trailing 2-1 heading into the third period, Gabrione knotted the score at two apiece with his eighth goal of the season from sophomore Sean McTiernan (Grayson, Ga.) 36 seconds into the frame. Gabrione entered the contest with 99 points in his career, and becomes the second Southern New Hampshire skater to eclipse the 100-point plateau in as many seasons after classmate Joe Collins (Mansfield, Mass.) accomplished the feat during the 2014-15 campaign.
Jonathan Huan staked the Ravens to a 2-0 lead after finding the back of the net late in the first and midway through the second. Huan's first came at 16:48 of the opening period with help from Brad Riccardi and Connor Mauro, before Riccardi and Taylor Fletcher set him up with 11:28 remaining in the middle stanza.
Sophomore Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) brought the Penmen within a single score at 14:55 of the second with his second goal of the year from McTiernan and junior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.), before Gabrione evened things up early in the third.
After the teams remained deadlocked at two for the ensuing 15:12, sophomore Kevin Lorcher (Rouen, France) gave Southern New Hampshire its first lead of the night with his third from classmates Griffin Rogers (Sanbornton, N.H.) and Kyle Valliere (Goffstown, N.H.). With time winding down in regulation and the goalie pulled, Blake Manginell potted the equalizer at 19:04 to send the game into overtime.
Slatky registered 22 saves in the first two periods before adding 17 over the course of the final 20 minutes of regulation and overtime. His counterpart, Tom McGuckin, recorded 25 stops which featured four in the extra session.
- The Penmen were outshot by a 42-28 margin. Franklin Pierce maintained a 41-24 edge in shots heading into the overtime after outshooting Southern New Hampshire, 17-7, in both the first and third periods.
- SNHU was whistled for three infractions and assessed six minutes worth of penalties, while the Ravens were assed 25 minutes on seven misdeeds.
- Gabrione extended his personal point streak to seven consecutive games, and he has amassed 10 points (5g, 5a) over that stretch.
The Penmen wrap up their nonconference schedule on Tuesday (Feb. 9) when they head to Framingham State University (4-15-1) for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
