Three-Goal Third Period Sends Saint Michael’s Past Ice Hockey

When and Where: January 17, 2017 – South Burlington, Vt. (Cairns Arena)
Score: Saint Michael's College 6, Southern New Hampshire University 3
Records: SNHU 11-8-0 (4-3-0 Northeast-10), SMC 7-8-2 (3-1-0 Northeast-10)

Junior Timothy Baylis' (West Haven, Conn.) marker just over two minutes into the third period completed Southern New Hampshire University's comeback from a three-goal deficit, but a trio of Saint Michael's College goals in the final 14 minutes of regulation pushed the Purple Knights past the Penmen, 6-3, in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action on Tuesday.

After falling behind, 3-0, just 10:44 into the contest, Southern New Hampshire mounted a comeback that began less than one minute into the second period and continued into the third. Senior Jay Sylvia (Acushnet, Mass.) put the Penmen on the board 49 seconds into the stanza, as he collected a one-time pass from junior Chris Moquin (Hooksett, N.H.) from behind the cage and punched home his 12th of the year. SNHU trimmed the Saint Michael's lead to a single goal just over four minutes later, as freshman Brian O'Callaghan (Quincy, Mass.) picked up the puck above the left faceoff circle and whipped a shot just inside the far post to make it 3-2 at 5:18.

The score remained unchanged through the duration of the second before Baylis brought the Penmen even 2:21 into the third. Freshman Brandon Gourdreau (Manchester, N.H.) slipped a pass from the left corner ricocheted off a skate and to the front of the net. Baylis gathered the loose puck and ripped a shot to the left side of the net.

The deadlock would be short-lived, however, as Josh Dickman netted would proved to be the game-winner less than three minutes later. Dickman maintained possession in the left corner, and after moving into the slot, shot a backhand through traffic to regain the lead for Saint Michael's at 5:13 of the third. Dickman set up Eric Salzillo for an insurance marker with 8:24 left in regulation before Colin Biebel added an empty netter with 1:21 to play.

The Purple Knights built an early 3-0 lead just over midway through the first. Sam D'Antuono staked Saint Michael's to a 1-0 lead 4:34 into the contest before doubling the advantage with help from Dickman at 7:01. Connor Mitchell capped the scoring in the first when he batted home the rebound of a Stephen Inman shot with 9:16 to play in the frame.

Junior Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) turned aside 34 shots for Southern New Hampshire in the setback, while Chris Johnson earned the victory for the Purple Knights with a 26-save performance.

- Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Michael's, 12-11, in the second period but were at a 40-29 disadvantage in total shots for the game.
