Juniors Ryan Slatky (Manchester, N.H.) and Matthew MacInnis (Arlington, Texas) combined with freshman Kurt Gutting (Weymouth, Mass.) to stop 30 shots, but a four-goal first period propelled Stonehill College to an 8-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action at the Foxboro Sports Center on Saturday night.
The contest marked the final game for the Penmen, who were eliminated from postseason play on Saturday evening after Assumption College topped Franklin Pierce University, 4-1.
The Skyhawks wasted little time in building a four-goal cushion, as they scored four times in the first 10:09 of play. Connor Jewett cracked the board first for Stonehill at 1:24 with help from Ryan Meade and Zachary Frament before Jack Hall doubled the advantage 1:48 later. Evan Jacques set up Christopher Page with 13:51 remaining in the opening stanza to make it 3-0, and Jewett added his second of the period four minutes later to extend the lead to four after one.
Hall tallied his second of the evening just 1:22 into the second from Tommy Newton and Connor Cassidy, who also assisted on Hall's first period marker, to push the Skyhawks in front, 5-0. A powerplay tally from Jacques with 15:54 left in the middle period extended the Stonehill advantage to six, and Connor Collier closed out the frame with his fourth of the year at 17:23. Newton capped the game's scoring in the third off a feed from Hall at 4:42 to provide the 8-0 final.
Slatky started Saturday night's tilt and stopped 11 of the 16 shots he faced through the game's first 21:22. Gutting closed out the second with nine saves in the final 18:38 of the frame before MacInnis steered aside 10 shots in the third period. Billy Palmer earned the victory between the pipes for the Skyhawks with 31 saves.
