Junior Alex Satrustegui (San Sebastian de los Reyes, Spain) and sophomore Louka Masset (Paris, France) each scored goals as the 22nd-ranked Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team opened the season with a 2-1 victory against Chestnut Hill College on Thursday evening at Victory Field.
Satrustegui staked Southern New Hampshire to a 1-0 lead early in the 18th minute when he received a touch pass in close from senior Michael Rowley (Cooperstown, N.Y.) and finished at the net for the first Penmen goal of the season.
The match would go to halftime that way, but SNHU wasted little time doubling its lead in the second stanza, as Masset cleaned up a loose ball off a rebound just 3:24 in and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Griffins would finally climb on the board in the 63rd minute on a Joseph Casaletto header, but Chestnut Hill did not put a shot on goal the rest of the way.
Junior goalkeeper Daniel Milton (Ajax, Ontario), in just his fourth career start, made three saves in the victory. Frank Maniscalco turned aside four shots for the Griffins.
-Southern New Hampshire wins its fourth straight season opener.
-It was the first time SNHU opened the year on the road since 2002.
-Masset's goal was the third of his career, while it was the first time Satrustegui scored in a Penmen uniform.
-SNHU is now 71-8-6 (.871) over its last 85 matches dating back to the beginning of the 2013 National Championship season.
-Southern New Hampshire outshot Chestnut Hill, 15-9, including 9-4 in the second stanza. Corner kicks were even at six apiece.
