Men’s Tennis Completes N.Y. Trip 2-0 with 6-1 Win at Daemen

Juniors Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) and Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) each won a pair of matches, as the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 6-1 victory over Daemen College on Monday afternoon at Williamsville South High School.


  • Willem van Biezen recorded a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win at No. 2 singles against David Gonzalez Villegas.
  • Bas van Biezen was a 6-2, 6-4 victor over Patrick O'Brien at No. 4 singles.
  • The two combined for a 6-3 triumph at No. 1 doubles against Jose Williamson III and Fabian Wilde.


  • With Daemen up, 1-0, in doubles, the van Biezens tied it with their win at No. 1, before grad students Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) earned the point for the Penmen by doubling up Ricardo Ruiz Martinez and Gonzalez Villegas, 6-3, at No. 3.
  • Graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) made it 2-0 in favor of Southern New Hampshire with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Ruiz Martinez.
  • Bas van Biezen pushed the lead to 3-0, with freshman Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) clinching the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Wilde.
  • Willem van Biezen's win stretched the advantage to 5-0, before Daemen made it onto the board with a victory at No. 5.
  • Freshman Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) claimed a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Justin Milner at No. 6 singles in his collegiate debut.


  • The Penmen improve to 2-0 for the fourth straight season.
  • Southern New Hampshire has now won 14 of its last 15 dating back to last year.
  • Fernandes has won 15 straight singles matches dating back to last season, while Bas van Biezen has captured 17-in-a-row.


  • The Penmen are back in action Thursday, Oct. 11 (4 p.m.) when they take on crosstown-rival Saint Anselm College in a Queen City Cup matchup.
