Men’s Tennis Sweep Past NYIT, 7-0, in Regional Showdown

Graduate student Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal) needed three sets to win his No. 1 singles match, but he finished it off to clinch a 7-0 win for the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team against the New York Institute of Technology on Friday night at the YMCA Allard Center.


  • Fernandes, ranked 48th in the nation, defeated Francisco Caldas, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. He also teamed with freshman Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) for a 6-2 victory against Kevin Huynh and Maxton Cook at No. 3 doubles.
  • Juniors Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) and Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands), the 29th-ranked doubles tandem in the nation, edged Caldas and Diego Espiniella, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles. Willem van Biezen also pulled out a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win against Nicolas Castaldo at No. 2 singles, while Bas van Biezen rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Cook at No. 4.


  • Graduate student Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and freshman Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) began the match by doubling up Castaldo and Yago Granda, 6-3, before Fernandes and Vacalares clinched the point. The van Biezens added their doubles win for good measure.
  • Vacalares made quick work of Espiniella, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3 singles to make it 2-0.
  • Willem van Biezen nudged the lead to 3-0, before Fernandes secured the victory with his No. 1 singles win.
  • Bas van Biezen stretched the advantage to 5-0, with Marreiros recording a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory against Nuynh at No. 5 and Torres outlasting Granda, 6-3, 2-6, 10-8, at No. 6 to complete the sweep.


  • Southern New Hampshire snaps a five-match losing skid against NYIT, which had defeated the Penmen by a combined score of, 35-7, over those five contests. SNHU's only win in the six-match all-time series had come March 16, 2013, when it posted a 5-4 home win.
  • NYIT is ranked third in the ITA East Region, while the Penmen are No. 4.


  • The Penmen are back in action Saturday, March 23 (1 p.m.) when they take on Adelphi University.
  • The next home match for SNHU is Friday, March 29 when it plays host to Queens (N.Y.) College.
