Men’s Tennis Claims Fourth Straight NE10 Regular-Season Title with 5-2 Win Over Merrimack

Graduate students Tiago Fernandes (Porto, Portugal), Miguel Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) and Ricardo Marreiros (Portimao, Portugal) each won a pair of matches to lead the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over Northeast-10 rival Merrimack College on Thursday afternoon at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts, as SNHU earned its fourth consecutive NE10 Regular-Season Championship.


  • Fernandes defeated Denis Davydov, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and also teamed with Ricardo Marreiros to double up Alec Mackay Rodriguez and Marshall Wood, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles.
  • Miguel Marreiros clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Andre Singer at No. 5, in addition to posting a 6-3 No. 2 doubles win against Alex Fedorov and Jonathan Garcia with freshman Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico).
  • Ricardo Marreiros made quick work of Paul Weidinger at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.


  • Fernandes and Ricardo Marreiros began doubles play with their win, before Merrimack pulled even with a victory at No. 1. Miguel Marreiros and Fernandes clinched the point with their No. 2 win.
  • Fernandes and Ricardo Marreiros also started out singles play with their respective victories, before Miguel Marreiros made it 4-0 and clinched the victory at No. 5.
  • Merrimack made it on to the board with a win at No. 2 singles, while junior Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) toppled Mackay Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles to make it 5-1. The Warriors capped the match with a No. 3 singles triumph.


  • Southern New Hampshire, which has won 11 straight, captures its fourth straight NE10 Regular-Season Championship.
  • All four regular-season titles have been clinched against Merrimack.
  • SNHU extends its NE10 winning streak, including the postseason, to 44 dating back to Oct. 15, 2015.
  • The Penmen polish off their fourth straight undefeated conference slate.
  • Fernandes improves to 45-0 all-time against NE10 foes in singles action, including the postseason and ITA East Regional Championship tournaments.
  • Fernandes wraps up conference play a perfect 9-0, while freshman Emmanuel Vacalares (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines) loses for the first time to finish 8-1.
  • van Biezen and classmate Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) also lost at No. 1 doubles for the first time to end league play 8-1.
  • The Penmen are ranked No. 2 in the region, while the Warriors are fourth.


  • The Penmen, who will be the top seed in the Northeast-10 Championship, will receive a first round bye and host a semifinal match Thursday, May 2.
