NEWARK, Del. – Junior Maddy Barone (Halifax, Mass.) and senior Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) of the Southern New Hampshire University softball team were selected to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-East Region Team on Wednesday, as the organization announced its All-Region teams and major award winners. Barone, a pitcher, was named to the First-Team and Garczynski was named the Second-Team catcher. Both had been selected to the Northeast-10 First-Team.
Barone leads the Northeast-10 with a 1.24 ERA. She went 18-6 this season, earning a National NFCA Pitcher of the Week award, and she received NE10 Pitcher of the Week award three times. She has 169 strikeouts in 186.1 innings pitched.
Garczynski is finishing her Southern New Hampshire career with her name all over the Penmen softball career record book. She is first all-time in batting average (.395), hits, RBI and doubles. This season, returning to catching on a full-time basis, she has yet to make an error. Garczynski leads the NE10 with a .426 average and is tied for third with six home runs.
The Southern New Hampshire University softball team opens play in the NCAA East Regional on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. with a game against Georgian Court University. The East Region 1 bracket will play games at top-seed Saint Anselm College. The Penmen are the fifth-seed in the East Region and the Lions are the fourth-seed. SNHU and Georgian Court have split six previous meetings, but have not met since early in the 2014 season.
