MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Southern New Hampshire University women's cross country team is gearing up for the 2018 NCAA Division II East Region Championships, hosted by Adelphi University. The race takes place this Saturday, November 17.
The Penmen will race at 1:15 p.m. at The Bethpage Polo at the Park course. First-team NE10 All-Conference runner junior Jill Couto (Newton Junction, N.H.) leads the squad. Couto was the top Penmen finisher in last year's regional as SNHU notched a ninth-place finish in Amherst, N.Y. Couto ran the 6k in 23:46.4 and has since lowered her personal best to 22:09.8. Also expected to compete for Southern New Hampshire this weekend is junior Jill Dieterich (Commack, N.Y.), who finished second on the squad in last year's NCAA Regional.
The line-up for Saturday also includes sophomore Maura Coakley (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and senior Ashley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.), who competed last year. Newcomers Olivia Coco (Bedford, N.H.) and Ashley Corcoran (East Longmeadow, Mass.) will try the NCAA Regional race for the first time.
Freshman Grace Henson (Cumberland, R.I.), a three-time NE10 Rookie of the Week, will miss the race due to illness.
The Penmen, who are seventh in the most recent United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Region Poll, ran sixth in the 2018 NE10 Cross Country Championships at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds in Hopkinton, N.H. on November 3. That race was also contested at 6k.
