van der Doorn's Overtime Strike Sends No. 9 Field Hockey to 2-1 Win Over St. Thomas Aquinas

Senior Laura van der Doorn (Beverwijk, The Netherlands) struck 4:13 into overtime to lift the ninth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.

  • van der Doorn tallied her ninth goal of the season to pull into a tie for the team lead.
  • Sophomore Emily Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) gained the equalizer late in the 11th minute of the opening quarter for her sixth of the season.


  • With 5:47 remaining in the first overtime, van der Doorn hammered home a feed from junior Hélène Servais (Brussels, Belgium) to send the Penmen to victory.
  • Lisa Larsson opened the scoring 7:17 into the contest.
  • Graduate student Melanie Rennie (Madison, Conn.) earned her ninth win of the season after making a pair of saves.
  • Suzanne Clarke racked up five stops for the Spartans.
  • Southern New Hampshire outshot STAC, 17-5, including 14-3 after the close of the first quarter.
  • The Penmen held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners, including 7-2 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
  • Southern New Hampshire moves to 8-0 against unranked opponents this season. In those eight wins, the Penmen are outscoring their competition by a 35-5 margin.
  • After dropping back-to-back contests, SNHU has now won its last three outings.
  • van der Doorn's goal was her ninth of the season and 30th of her career, making her the first 30-goal scorer in program history.
  • Southern New Hampshire returns to Larkin Field on Monday (October 14) when it hosts Molloy College in a Northeast-10 Conference clash at 1 p.m.
