MANSFIELD, Mass. – Senior Willem van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's tennis team was chosen as the Northeast-10 Player of the Week, while freshman Oscar Hawken (Oslo, Norway) was tabbed the Rookie of the Week, both for the period ending Sept. 29, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
van Biezen, who was also the league's Player of the Week on Sept. 17, went 2-0 last week with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Nino Krneta and a 6-2 triumph against Krneta and Cooper Smith at No. 1 doubles with his brother and classmate Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands), as the Penmen defeated Post University, 6-1, Sunday.
Hawken was also 2-0 last week, taking care of Samuel Rodriguez, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6 singles, and combining with sophomore Fernando Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) to secure a 6-2 victory against Rodriguez and Joe Alvord at No. 3 doubles.
van Biezen, Hawken and the Penmen return to action Sunday, Oct. 6 (9 a.m.) when they play host to Daemen College at the Penmen Stadium Tennis Courts.
