MANCHESTER N.H. –Michelle DeRoma (West Roxbury, Mass) had 19 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University women's basketball team to a 71-38 victory over Concordia (N.Y.) College Saturday night at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The non-conference matchup marked the season opener for both teams.
DeRoma shot 8-14 from the field and also added five rebounds. Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine)had 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Libby Cullerot (Henniker, N.H.) added nine points off the bench on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.
For the Clippers, Katie Nikosey led the team in scoring with 16 points while Chanessa Blakemore added seven rebounds.
The Penmen led 40-18 at the break after beginning the game on a 13-1 run. They held the Clippers to just 20 percent shooting in the first half, and Concordia did not score a field goal until 6:24 into the contest en route to just 13 field goals on the night. The Penmen also forced 34 turnovers.
SNHU shot 43 percent from the field and out-rebounded Concordia 51-40. It was the first time since November 2009 that the Penmen topped 50 boards.
The Penmen return to action on Wednesday when they travel across town to take on Saint Anselm at 5:30 p.m.
