MANCHESTER, N.H. – Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, N.H.) totaled 21 points, 14 rebounds and five assists as Southern New Hampshire University posted a 66-59 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over The College of Saint Rose Thursday afternoon at the SNHU Fieldhouse. The Penmen, who won their fourth in a row, evened their record at 7-7 and 5-5 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights, who came into the game winning six of their last seven, are now 10-4 and 6-4 in the league.
Houghtaling finished 9-14 from the floor while her 14 rebounds were a career-high. Sloane Sorrell (Berwick, Maine) was the other Penmen player in double figures, as she totaled 18 points on 7-9 shooting, while also grabbing nine rebounds to narrowly miss a double-double. Megan Smith (Smithfield, Maine) added seven points for Southern New Hampshire.
Ashley Rath finished 5-10 behind the arc and led all scorers with 25 points for Saint Rose. Ola Shajuyigbe totaled 12 points for the Golden Knights, while Lynsey Timbrouck handed out 11 assists.
SNHU, which trailed by as many as seven points in the second half, held a 59-54 lead with 1:32 remaining following a free throw by Sorrell. Saint Rose made it a 59-57 game with 1:12 left when Rath knocked down a three at the top of the key. Following an SNHU timeout, Sorrell found a cutting Magdala Johnson (Sandown, N.H.) for a layup with 46 seconds left to make it 61-57.
Rath would be off the mark on another three-point attempt with Amy Voekel grabbing the offensive rebound. Voekel would travel with 36 seconds to go to give the ball back to the hosts. Southern New Hampshire would seal the victory by going 5-6 at the free throw line the rest of the way.
Saint Rose led 35-31 at halftime and opened up a 47-40 lead with 13:20 to go following a basket by Timbrouck. The Penmen would reel off eight unanswered points and a three from the left corner by Johnson with just over 10 minutes to go gave Southern New Hampshire a 48-47 lead.
That lead would be short-lived, as Rath connected on a three with 9:23 remaining. Saint Rose led 52-49 with 8:25 to go before the Penmen took the lead for good as part of a 9-0 run on a conventional three-point play by Houghtaling with 6:40 left that made it 53-52. Christine Duffy (South Boston, Mass.) made a pair of free throws with 2:10 left that put SNHU up 58-52.
Houghtaling scored SNHU's first 11 points as the Penmen opened up an 11-5 lead 4:14 into the contest. The Penmen would take a 19-10 lead on another Houghtaling basket with 11:58 left in the first half, but Saint Rose used an 8-3 spurt to make it 21-18 on a pair of Shajuyigbe free throws with just over eight minutes left before intermission. SNHU countered with six unanswered points to make it 27-21 on Sorrell's basket with 5:43 to go. The Golden Knights closed out the half on a 14-4 run and a Liz Tremblay layup with 22 seconds left gave the guests a 35-31 halftime lead.
SNHU shot 55% in the second half and 53.2% for the contest while limiting the Golden Knights to 36.5% shooting. Saint Rose was 7-13 (53.8%) from behind the arc in the first half but went just 2-10 from three in the second half. The Penmen held a 38-27 rebounding advantage and went 15-22 at the free throw line while Saint Rose was 4-6 at the stripe.
Southern New Hampshire returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Le Moyne College for a 1:00 contest.
