Greyhounds Slow Down Women's Basketball 57-45

MANCHESTER, N.H. – MOLLY GRIFFITHS (Walpole, MA) and KELLY MEREDITH (Franklin, MA) each totaled 18 points as Assumption College posted a 57-45 Northeast-10 women's basketball victory over Southern New Hampshire University here SATURDAY afternoon.  The Greyhounds, who are ranked No. 4 in this week's N.C.A.A. East Region ranking, improve to 14-5 and 12-3 in the NE-10, while the Penmen, who saw a three-game win streak snapped, are now 10-9 and 8-7 in the league.

GRIFFITHS finished 8-15 from the floor and also grabbed 11 rebounds, five of those coming on the offensive end, while MEREDITH finished with eight rebounds.  KATY HOWARD (Medway, MA) added nine points for Assumption, while Shannon Ray handed out six assists.

JULIA HOUGHTALING (Franconia, NH/New Hampton School) paced Southern New Hampshire with a double-double, recording 13 points and 13 rebounds.  SLOANE SORRELL (Berwick, ME/Noble) was the other Penmen player in double figures, as she added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Assumption took control of the game early in the second half, turning a 27-26 halftime lead into a 37-28 lead with a 10-2 run capped by a Meredith basket with 15:28 remaining.  The Greyhounds took their largest lead, 51-38, with 6:21 to go on a basket by SABRINA SICILIANO (Fairfield, CT).  The Penmen scored the game's next four points to make it 51-42 on a SORRELL basket with 5:05 to go, but would get no closer.

The first half saw three ties and seven lead changes.  The Penmen built an early 11-6 lead following a layup by CHRISTINE DUFFY (South Boston, MA/Archbishop Williams) with 12:14 to go in the half, but the guests countered with a 12-2 run, and a three by GRIFFITHS with 8:54 left put Assumption on top 18-13.  SNHU would take one point leads twice down the stretch, the last on a layup by VICTORIA WISEMAN (Montreal, PQ/New Hampton School) with 1:16 left, but the 'Hounds took a 27-26 lead into the locker room.

Assumption limited S.N.H.U. to just 32% shooting in the second half and 38% for the game while the Greyhounds shot 54.2% over the final 20 minutes after shooting just 30.8% in the first half.  The Penmen outrebounded Assumption 37-35, but went just 5-13 at the free throw line and committed 19 turnovers leading to an 18-6 advantage in Greyhound points off turnovers.

Southern New Hampshire returns to action WEDNESDAY when it hosts crosstown rival Saint Anselm in a 5:30 game.  Assumption is also back in action WEDNESDAY, as it hosts Saint Rose at 5:30.
