Women’s Lacrosse Pulls Away from Saint Michael’s for Second Straight Win, 23-16

Seniors Kristin Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) erupted for a season-high nine points to lead the Southern New Hampshire University women's lacrosse team to a 23-16 win against Saint Michael's College with a big second half Wednesday at Duffy Field.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Wilder racked up eight goals and collected an assist.
  • Freshman Kelsey Long (Woburn, Mass.) tallied up eight points on five goals and three helpers, in addition to winning nine draw controls.
  • Senior Alexis Felt (Manchester, N.H.) produced seven points with four goals and three assists.
  • Freshman Erin Gorton (Kennebunk, Maine) chimed in with two goals and three assists for five points.
  • Sophomore Dani Tompkins (Derry, N.H.) registered a career-best three points with two goals and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Saint Michael's surged out to a 4-1 lead over the opening 8:18, before Southern New Hampshire countered with five of the next six to take a 6-5 lead at the 14:30 mark. Wilder and Gorton each recorded a goal and an assist during the stretch.
  • The Purple Knights would again score four of the next five to creep out to a 9-7 lead with just over 10 minutes to go, but junior Merry Harrington (Peabody, Mass.) and Wilder combined for two of the final three to trim SNHU's halftime deficit to 10-9.
  • Wilder and Felt each scored twice during a four-goal run to begin the second half and give the Penmen the lead for good at 13-10 less than two minutes in. Saint Michael's notched two of the next three to make it a two-goal game, but Long's two points powered another four-goal stretch that widened the SNHU advantage to 18-12 with 22:01 on the clock.
  • The Purple Knights would close to within 18-14, but Southern New Hampshire kept Saint Michael's at bay by potting five of the next six to break open a 23-15 advantage with just under five minutes remaining. Wilder scored twice during the span, with Felt adding a goal and an assist.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Freshman Hayle Ashford (Atkinson, N.H.) made eight saves for the Penmen, while Victoria Putnam stopped 15 of the 32 shots she faced over the opening 54:43 for the Purple Knights. Lucy Chin did not make a save on the six shots that came her way over the final 5:17.
  • Southern New Hampshire outshot Saint Michael's, 43-35, including 26-16 after halftime.
  • The Penmen also owned a 24-17 margin in draw controls.
  • SNHU was 3-for-10 on its free-position attempts, while the Purple Knights went just 1-for-7.

NOTES

  • Southern New Hampshire wins its second straight and had to overcome a halftime deficit in both contests.
  • Wilder, SNHU's all-time leading goal and point scorer, extended her career marks to 235 goals and 276 points.
  • Felt's seven points move her past Lindsay Bucknam (141) and into 12th place on the program's all-time points list with 143. She now owns 111 career goals.
  • Harrington, who now has 80 career goals, shot past Emily King (103) and Sara Halbich (103) for 18th place all-time with 104 points.
  • Tompkins now has 10 career goals.
