MANSFIELD, Mass. – Senior Anna Sala (Matadepera, Spain) and freshman Alexxa Etienne (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) of the Southern New Hampshire University women's tennis team were selected as the Northeast-10 Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the period ending March 17, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Sala, who was also the NE10 Player of the Week on Oct. 16 and 23, went 1-1 at No. 1 singles, clinching a 7-0 victory against Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nthabi Mogopodi. Sala also teamed with classmate Sofia Morais (Porto, Portugal) for a 6-2 No. 1 doubles win against Mogopodi and Andrea Gallardo.
Etienne was also 1-1 at No. 3 singles, including a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 win against RWC's Marousia Bosch. Etienne also combined with senior Rachel Wagner (Framingham, Mass.) for a 6-0 No. 2 doubles victory against Bijisha Shrestha and Salome Darsalia. Etienne, the NE10 Rookie of the Year, is the league's Rookie of the Week for the fourth time, having also captured the accolade on Sept. 18 and 25, as well as Oct. 16.
Through 17 matches this season, Sala is 10-9 in singles play, finishing 8-3 in league action, while Etienne is 14-7 and was 9-2 in the NE10.
Sala, Etienne and the Penmen are back in action Sunday, April 7 (11 a.m.) when they play host to Endicott College.
